Datong was the first city to build international twin town links in Shanxi Province. Omuda in Japan was the first international twin town of Datong and is located in northwest Japan in the middle of Kyushu island. It is the fourth largest city in Fuluoka Prefecture and like Datong Omuda is also a city rich in coal resources. The first contact between these two cities dates back to 1978 when the Datong Coal Bureau (formal body of Datong Coal Mine Group) imported coal mining equipment from Mitsui Miike Machinery Co., Ltd. in Omuda. Datong and Omuda established a formal international twin city agreement in 1981. Since then Datong and Omuda have continue exchanges in the field of culture, sports, education, public health, animal, staff replacement, and preservation of the ancient city. Since 2004 outstanding achievements have been made in environmental protection and ecology. Around 40 experts and researchers from Datong went to Omuda for training in the field of environmental protection, ecology and environmental protection education. The friendship between Datong and Omuda has been strengthened through these exchanges.
