Zuoyun County is located on the Loess Plato. To its east is Datong City, to its west is Youyu County, to its south is Suozhou City, to its north is Hohhot City. Zuoyun has over 2,200 years history. Zuoyun town was added to the list of the second batch of historical and cultural town of Shanxi Province. Zouyun was a frontier region of historical strategic importance. Due to frequent wars on the northern frontier, Zuoyun also had frequent changes in administration and population. In the Spring and Autumn Period (770BC-476BC), the area covered by present day Zuoyun was the grazing land of the Baiyang Tribes of Beidi or Northern Di , (Literally Northern Barbarians, this was a term referring to various ethnic groups who lived in northern China during the Zhou Dynasty from the 11th century BC to 256 BC.). During the Warring States Period (475BC-221BC), it was the Wuzhou Pass of Zhao Kingdom (One of the seven major powers of the Warring States Period). The historical relics within Zuoyun are the Great Wall from the East Han Dynasty (24-220) and Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), Great Wall Fortress, such as Bao'an and Weilu, Lengyan Temple, Shilihe Ecological Park, Dongshan Forest Park.
